Why Feminine?
Why do I focus on the Feminine?
I have been asked this question many times – why focus on the Feminine, on the Divine Feminine or Sacred Feminine, why make it binary? Let me begin with a clarification.
I am not speaking of the Feminine from a gendered perspective – when I speak of the Feminine, I am invoking the Feminine Face of God but more importantly, how that Feminine Face of God is mirrored within us, a reflection of who we are, if only we allow that part to be seen – which means, acknowledging the Feminine within. This invocation, this mirroring of the Feminine Godself, applies to all bodies, all genders.
There is so much to know about ourselves, so much that we have forgotten that is found in this radiant light of our soul. But whilst the radiance of God/Goddess/Universe/Source/Unity shining from our Being is not reserved for those who choose to invoke the Feminine face of God, there are many reasons why we bring focus to the Feminine.
One of the reasons is when I speak about the Feminine, the Masculine is equally part of the expression. There is so much that is LOST when we do not explore this polarity within ourselves.
The invitation – the way of the Feminine is always an invitation – to hold these concepts of the Feminine and Masculine as an energetic representation that exists within our Being regardless of our gender. The purpose for acknowledging these two energies serve a very important function.
I identify as a Woman and I am an expression of the dance between the Feminine and Masculine within me. You may identify as non-gendered – the invitation is still the same; to hold the expression of your non-gendered self through the dance of the Feminine and Masculine.
I am both Kali and Shiva.
Knowing this, is both a Healing journey for all the times my inner Kali was oppressed, condemned, diminished, marginalized and burnt at the stake. Equally, knowing this, is a Transformative journey in RECLAIMING what was lost as a result of this oppression and coming into a new relationship with Masculine- once seen as the oppressing energy.
If we are too hasty in our desire to eradicate polarity from our vocabulary, we deny the role that polarity plays as a great healer and transformer.
In this great reclaiming of the Feminine, we come into a new relationship with the Masculine. Just as there are wounded aspects of the Feminine that are ready to be healed, so too are there wounded aspects of the Masculine, the toxic Masculine undergoing the greatest healing and transformation in these times. This happens through our very commitment to acknowledge both the Feminine and the Masculine within our Being and then to do something to bring about healing and liberation for all.
So the invitation is to name what we have lost. Oppressed, marginalized, burnt at the stake – we name this as the Feminine – the feminine face of God that is now willing us to reclaim her in our bodies, through our feelings, through our expression as a Human Being.
Paradoxically, as is the very nature of the Feminine, our healing and transformative journey through Polarity opens our hearts to Unity – to oneness - to the non-dualistic expression of the Divine.
Ultimately, our journey of Reclaiming the Feminine brings us into a new relationship with Masculine – bringing us into wholeness, oneness. It is like the love affair between Radha and Krishna – although the story is played out by two Beings, we experience it as the embodiment of the Lover and Beloved within us.
I share this story of my first mystical experience with the Divine, which happened in India when I was 14, at the birthplace of Lord Krishna. I recall feeling intoxicated by the chanting and dancing in the Krishna temple where the live size statue of Radha (Krishna’s lover or consort) and Krishna were within my reach. I recall closing my eyes and dancing with Krishna, in that moment I became Radha or Radha became I – I don’t know. I just knew I was at home – my Beloved in my hand and I his Lover and equally becoming the Beloved to all. It was one of those moments – two becoming one becoming all.
When our hearts open to the radical experience of Love – as only the Feminine will have us Be – we come into a new relationship to what it means to be in relationship. We begin to see all things through the eyes of the Beloved. Which means we look at ourselves adoringly through the eyes of self-love. This changes everything.
The Feminine is radical in her expression of Love.
So, ultimately, through the exploration of polarity of both Feminine and Masculine, we engage in the greatest healing and transformative journey, arriving paradoxically in Oneness.
For me, my healing and transformative journey always begins when I turn inward and listen to the Feminine within. She is always guiding me to wholeness.
